In The Dreamhouse Machado

In the Dream House is no mere confessional: Machado also widens her aperture to analyze our larger culture. She tackles depictions of queerness and abuse, from Star Trek to Vertigo to Gaslight, investigating the ways in which abusers ensnare and manipulate their targets.

My debut memoir, In the Dream House,is available from Graywolf Press (US) and Strange Light (Canada), and Serpent's Tail (UK).
”Welcome to the House of Machado. Proceed directly into the forbidden room; enjoy the view as the floor gives way.” —Parul Sehgal, The New York Times
One of the best-reviewed nonfiction titles of 2019

  • “A reminder to remember: just because the sharpness of the sadness has faded does not mean that it was not, once, terrible. It means only that time and space, creatures of infinite girth and tenderness, have stepped between the two of you, and they are keeping you safe as they were once unable to.” ― Carmen Maria Machado, In the Dream House.
  • Machado, 142 Final Thoughts. This review was basically me gushing about how great Carmen Maria Machado’s writing is with a Thesaurus.com tab open for “brilliant” synonyms. I cannot recommend this book enough. In the Dream House deals with heavy topics, but ends with a message of hope. I admire Machado so much for baring her heart for us.
  • In the Dream House has been called a speculative memoir, an emerging term for an in-between form that incorporates fantastical elements into creative nonfiction. Machado’s memoir is the most recent addition to a genre that includes work written by queer and trans authors like Kai Cheng Thom and Ariel Gore, and published by small publishers.
  • A revolutionary memoir about domestic abuse by the award-winning author of Her Body and Other PartiesIn the Dream House is Carmen Maria Machados engrossing and wildly innovative account of a relationship gone bad, and a bold dissection of the mechanisms and cultural representations of psychological abuse.
